What is spin rate in golf?

The rotational velocity of the golf ball at impact, measured in RPM.

Spin rate, defined

The rotational velocity of the golf ball at launch, expressed in revolutions per minute (RPM). Driver Tour averages cluster around 2,600-2,760 RPM.

Why it matters

Spin governs the shape of ball flight and total carry distance. Too high (above 3,000 RPM for driver) and you balloon the ball, losing distance. Too low (below 1,800 RPM) and the ball flutters unpredictably.

What changes it

Strike location, dynamic loft, angle of attack, tee height. Higher tee = generally lower spin.
