What is spin rate in golf?
The rotational velocity of the golf ball at impact, measured in RPM.
Spin rate, defined
Spin rate is how fast the ball rotates as it leaves the club, measured in revolutions per minute. Backspin is what matters for flight: it generates lift, holds the ball in the air, and decides how hard the ball stops when it lands.
What spin does
Spin is the reason a golf ball carries as far as it does. A ball with no backspin falls out of the air. Too much and the ball climbs steeply, sheds forward momentum and drops short. The right amount is club-dependent and always a trade between carry and control.
- Driver. Generally less spin, because you want carry plus roll.
- Irons. Enough spin to hold a green, which means accepting a steeper descent.
- Wedges. Spin is the entire point. It is what makes the ball stop near where it lands.
What changes it
Spin loft, the gap between the dynamic loft at impact and the direction the club is travelling, is the dominant factor. Widen the gap and spin rises. Narrow it and spin falls. Strike location matters too: high on the face reduces spin, low increases it. Clean contact with dry grooves and a clean ball matters more than most golfers expect.
The mat and tee problem
Two things about indoor practice distort spin specifically.
First, tee height. Lifting an iron off the surface reduces compression and adds dynamic loft, which shows up as higher launch with lower spin. If your indoor iron numbers look high and floaty next to your outdoor numbers, check the tee before you change anything else.
Second, the mat. A hitting mat will not let the club take a divot. A slightly fat strike that would have dug into turf instead bounces the sole off the rubber underlayer and into the ball. That changes contact, and it changes spin, in a way the launch monitor reports but cannot explain.
Measured or estimated
This is the number to treat most carefully. Some launch monitors measure spin directly, using doppler radar or high-speed images of a marked ball. Others estimate it from ball speed, launch and club data. An estimated spin figure is a model output, not an observation, and it can be confidently wrong. Find out which one your device does before you make an equipment decision on the strength of it.
Why is my spin rate lower indoors than outdoors?
Two common causes: an iron teed slightly off the mat, which reduces compression and adds dynamic loft, and the mat converting a fat strike into a bounce. Both reduce spin.
Is spin rate measured or calculated?
It depends on the device. Some measure spin directly with radar or camera images of a marked ball. Others estimate it from other data, and an estimate can be wrong in ways a measurement is not.
