2-iron tee height: why ¼".
Driving irons and utility irons want the ball just clearing the turf. ¼ inch gets you there.
The "just-off-the-deck" tee
A driving iron, 2-iron, or utility iron played off a tee wants the bottom of the ball just barely above the surface. The classic on-grass tee for this is a 3/8-inch tee pushed almost flush with the ground, giving you ¼ inch of ball-bottom clearance.
Why not zero?
Zero is "off the deck", and you can hit it off the deck. But a slight ¼-inch lift lets you make ball-first contact with a swing that bottoms out at the mat surface, not below it. Mat-friendly. Strike-friendly.
What clubs this height serves
- 2-iron, 3-iron driving iron
- Utility iron (any forged or hollow-body utility from Mizuno, Srixon, Cobra, TaylorMade)
- Hybrid (most hybrids prefer this over the mini-driver height)
- 4-iron through 7-iron when you want a tee for a Par 3
Common questions
Can I use this for a wedge?
Most wedges play better off the deck. If you tee them up on a Par 3, use this height.
